The construction of the Estádio do Drag?o (Stadium of the Dragon) started in 2001. The construction costs of the venue were €98 million. It opened in 2003 with a football match between FC Porto and the world famous Spanish side FC Barcelona. The home side won the game 2-0 in front of a capacity crowd. The football club from Barcelona became the second sports club with 100 million followers on its main social media page.
The stadium was one of the 2004 UEFA European Football Championship venues. It hosted the opening game of the tournament, which was won by the Hellenic Republic after beating the Portuguese Republic. The second European championship game at the venue was played between the national football teams of Germany and the Netherlands. It ended in a 1-1 draw. The stadium’s third game of the tournament, which was played between the Italian Republic and Sweden, also ended in a 1-1 draw. The Czech Republic won the fourth game of the competition at the Estádio do Drag?o against Denmark 3-0. The Hellenic Republic won the stadium’s fifth and last game of the tournament against the Czech Republic 1-0.
The stadium hosted its first-ever UEFA Champions League final in 2021. The game was won by Chelsea Football Club after beating Manchester City Football Club. It was the third European football championship final between two English clubs. Manchester United won the first one against Chelsea and Liverpool FC won the second one against Tottenham Hotspur.
The Estádio do Drag?o is the home of FC Porto, one of the major Portuguese sports clubs. The club was founded in 1893. In 1935, they were crowned Portuguese football champions for the first time in their history. FC Porto became the second Portuguese football club with 20 domestic top-flight league titles in 2004. Their arch-rivals Benfica became the first one.
FC Porto won the European Champion Clubs’ Cup in 1987 for the first time in their history. They won the trophy after beating the German side FC Bayern München in the Austrian city of Vienna. FC Porto drew an average home attendance of 45,000 in that domestic league season. The same year, FC Porto became the first Portuguese world champions in football. They won the title after defeating Pe?arol from Uruguay in the Japanese city of Tokyo. 45,000 spectators attended the final.
