The construction of the stadium began in 1992 with costs totaling £16 million, making it one of the largest sports venues by capacity in London at the time. Millwall FC, nicknamed The Lions, have used the stadium for home matches since 4 August 1993, when they played their inaugural game against Sporting Clube de Portugal. In their first league season at The Den, Millwall drew an average home attendance of 10,000 fans. Millwall Football Club itself was founded in 1885 and has a storied history in English football.
