Chengdu Sports Centre Stadium: An Icon of Chinese Football

Official Name: Chengdu Sports Centre Stadium (成都市体育中心)
Location: Central Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China
Primary Use: Football (Soccer)
Opened: 28 December 1991
Seating Capacity: 39,000

📍 Location & Context

  • Full Address: The stadium was centrally located at 2 Renmin Middle Road, Qingyang District, Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China.

  • Central Landmark: Situated in the absolute heart of Chengdu, adjacent to Tianfu Square, the stadium was more than a sports venue; it was a central landmark and cultural icon for the city for over 25 years. Its location made it the focal point for major public events and the heartbeat of Chengdu’s passionate football culture.

⚽ Primary Use & Legacy

The Chengdu Sports Centre Stadium was, first and foremost, the historic home of football in Sichuan.

  • Football Heritage: It was the long-term home stadium for Sichuan’s top professional football clubs, most notably the Sichuan Quanxing (later Sichuan Guancheng) and Chengdu Tiancheng (later Chengdu Blades/Better City) football clubs. It hosted countless memorable matches in the Chinese Jia-A League and the Chinese Super League (CSL).

  • National Team Venue: The stadium regularly hosted matches for the China national football team, including World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers, where it was renowned for its intimidating and passionate atmosphere.

  • Multi-Purpose Use: Beyond football, it hosted large-scale concerts by international and domestic artists, cultural performances, and public gatherings, cementing its role as Chengdu’s premier event space throughout the 1990s and 2000s.

🏆 Historic Highlight: 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup

The stadium’s pinnacle of international recognition came in 2007 when it was selected as a host venue for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

  • A Historic Opening Match: On September 11, 2007, the stadium hosted a legendary Group B opener between the United States and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, which ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw in front of 35,000 spectators.

  • World Cup Hub: It hosted a total of six World Cup matches, featuring world football powers including Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, Nigeria, and Sweden. This event permanently etched the stadium’s name into global football history.

  • Legacy of the Event: Hosting the Women’s World Cup showcased Chengdu’s organizational capabilities on the world stage and demonstrated the stadium’s ability to meet FIFA’s stringent international standards for broadcasting, security, and fan experience at that time.

🛠 Facility Features & Later History

  • Architecture: For its era, it was a state-of-the-art, bowl-shaped stadium. A distinctive feature was its iconic twin spires (or tower-like structures) atop the main stand, which became a recognizable part of the Chengdu skyline.

  • Final Years and Demolition: After decades of service, the stadium’s infrastructure aged. Its final major professional tenant, Chengdu Better City FC, moved to the newer Shuangliu Sports Centre Stadium. In 2017, the stadium was officially closed. It was subsequently demolished to make way for a new, comprehensive sports and cultural complex. The original site is now part of the redevelopment project for the Chengdu Sports Center.

  • Sport Center LED Lighting Solutions: In its operational prime, the stadium was equipped with modern (for its time) floodlighting systems to meet the requirements of night matches and television broadcasts for events like the Chinese Super League and the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Today, advanced LED lighting solutions are a standard for all new major stadiums and sports centers, offering superior energy efficiency, brighter and more uniform illumination for high-definition broadcasting, and dynamic lighting controls for different events—features that a successor venue on the site would certainly incorporate.

The Chengdu Sports Centre Stadium is now part of Chengdu’s cherished sporting history. It is remembered as the hallowed ground where generations of fans celebrated the triumphs and endured the heartbreaks of Sichuan football, and where the world’s best female footballers competed on its pitch.

Preface

1. Optimal Experience

With the growing popularity of nighttime sports events, professional competitions demand higher lighting quality. The glare from traditional fixtures can no longer meet athletes’ expectations for sensory experience. Leveraging breakthroughs in MECREE’s sports lighting technology, our precise light control and anti-glare designs enable athletes to perform at their peak and enjoy an exceptional sports experience.

2.Impact of Light Pollution

Issues caused by unnecessary nighttime lighting, such as light pollution and light trespass, are increasingly concerning and have led to rising public complaints. Amid growing environmental awareness, lighting designers must prioritize controlling “Light Pollution” and “Light Trespass.” We are committed to addressing this challenge through innovative optical technologies.

What kind of light is used in stadiums?

Currently common traditional stadium lights model for some international stadiums as below:
MVF406/1800W, HNF003, MVF401, MVF403, MVF024, EF-2000, YOA56305, YOAX56400, 2kW: HQI-TS 2000WDS, 2kW: HQI-TS 1000WDS, MHN-SA 2KW 400V/956, MHN-SB/HO 2KW 400V/956, LPW2000M/D, LPW1000MB/L, LPP2000MHN-SA, LPP2000MHN-SB.
There is big problem that traditional lamps can not cannot meet the needs of 4K and 8K high-definition broadcast and huge energy consumption.
With the strengthening of environmental lighting awareness and the pursuit of high-quality lighting, there is a trend to replace traditional lamps by high quality of LED Stadium Lights.
MECREE has launched the following series of LED Sport Stadium Lighting:

  1. R580 series stadium lights are designed for 160 feet to 1000 feet of lighting distances and 4K, 8K HD broadcasting.
  2. AFL series stadium lights are designed for lighting distances from 50 feet to 330 feet and improve the brightness uniformity.
  3. P73-L and A65 series stadium lights are designed for the precise light control needs of the North American and European markets. The Upward Light Ratio of the P73P73–L/A65 series LED stadium lights is 0%.

MECREE’s specially engineered precision lighting control is designed to meet the needs of such users. The polarized light range of 65-73° is defined as the P73-L and A65 series products, which deliver an unparalleled visual experience while offering access to thousands of IES profiles.

How to accurately aim the lights in the stadium?

In current sports lighting projects, high-altitude light calibration is recognized as a major efficiency bottleneck. The process carries high safety risks, is prone to aiming deviations, and involves cumbersome installation and removal procedures, making it difficult to achieve the required uniformity.

MECREE’s innovative laser aiming mount was designed precisely to address these issues. It revolutionizes the workflow through three key advantages:

Easy Installation: With a simple design, it allows rapid mounting and dismounting, significantly lowering the operational threshold.

Precise Aiming: Ensures accurate laser alignment, fundamentally guaranteeing uniform illumination and compliance with lighting standards.

Efficient Operation: Reduces labor and time costs by up to 80%. Calibrating 200 fixtures at height previously took 20 days; now the same workload can be completed in just 4 days.

Choosing MECREE means choosing a safer, more precise, and highly efficient sports lighting solution.
