Central Landmark: Situated in the absolute heart of Chengdu, adjacent to Tianfu Square, the stadium was more than a sports venue; it was a central landmark and cultural icon for the city for over 25 years. Its location made it the focal point for major public events and the heartbeat of Chengdu’s passionate football culture.
The Chengdu Sports Centre Stadium was, first and foremost, the historic home of football in Sichuan.
Football Heritage: It was the long-term home stadium for Sichuan’s top professional football clubs, most notably the Sichuan Quanxing (later Sichuan Guancheng) and Chengdu Tiancheng (later Chengdu Blades/Better City) football clubs. It hosted countless memorable matches in the Chinese Jia-A League and the Chinese Super League (CSL).
National Team Venue: The stadium regularly hosted matches for the China national football team, including World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers, where it was renowned for its intimidating and passionate atmosphere.
Multi-Purpose Use: Beyond football, it hosted large-scale concerts by international and domestic artists, cultural performances, and public gatherings, cementing its role as Chengdu’s premier event space throughout the 1990s and 2000s.
The stadium’s pinnacle of international recognition came in 2007 when it was selected as a host venue for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
A Historic Opening Match: On September 11, 2007, the stadium hosted a legendary Group B opener between the United States and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, which ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw in front of 35,000 spectators.
World Cup Hub: It hosted a total of six World Cup matches, featuring world football powers including Argentina, Australia, Canada, England, Nigeria, and Sweden. This event permanently etched the stadium’s name into global football history.
Legacy of the Event: Hosting the Women’s World Cup showcased Chengdu’s organizational capabilities on the world stage and demonstrated the stadium’s ability to meet FIFA’s stringent international standards for broadcasting, security, and fan experience at that time.
Architecture: For its era, it was a state-of-the-art, bowl-shaped stadium. A distinctive feature was its iconic twin spires (or tower-like structures) atop the main stand, which became a recognizable part of the Chengdu skyline.
Final Years and Demolition: After decades of service, the stadium’s infrastructure aged. Its final major professional tenant, Chengdu Better City FC, moved to the newer Shuangliu Sports Centre Stadium. In 2017, the stadium was officially closed. It was subsequently demolished to make way for a new, comprehensive sports and cultural complex. The original site is now part of the redevelopment project for the Chengdu Sports Center.
