Cairo International Stadium is Egypt’s premier football stadium and one of Africa’s largest sporting venues, with a seating capacity of 74,000 spectators. Designed by German architect Werner March, the stadium’s construction began in 1955 and it officially opened in 1960. It has since become a central hub for Egyptian and African football, hosting national team matches, domestic league games, and international tournaments.
The Cairo International Stadium has a rich football heritage:
African Championship for National Teams: The stadium has hosted multiple matches of the Africa Cup of Nations, where the Egyptian national team, nicknamed The Pharaohs, has achieved several championship titles. Egypt’s first African title was won in 1957 after defeating Ethiopia 4-0 in Sudan.
FIFA World Cup History: Egypt played its first-ever FIFA World Cup match in 1934 against Hungary in Naples, Italy.
Al-Ahly & Zamalek Home Matches: Both clubs use the stadium for home games.
Al-Ahly SC: Founded in 1907, crowned Egyptian champions for the first time in 1949, and won their 10th African championship title in 2021 after defeating the Kaizer Chiefs. Al-Ahly also became the first African sports club with 10 million social media followers.
Zamalek SC: One of Africa’s first sports clubs valued at $10 million, winning their 10th top-flight league title in 2003.
Historic Rivalry: Matches between Al-Ahly and Zamalek are among the fiercest in African football, attracting crowds exceeding 100,000 spectators.
Notable Players: Ahmed Hassan, a former midfielder, played for both Al-Ahly and Zamalek, becoming the most-capped male football player in history with 184 appearances for Egypt. He won multiple African championships for national teams and scored in the African club championship final of 2008 with Al-Ahly before retiring in 2013 with Zamalek.
