Busan Asiad Main Stadium is a colossal multi-purpose stadium located in Busan, South Korea. The stadium’s entire conception and scale were driven by two back-to-back global events.
Primary Purpose – 2002 Asian Games: It was constructed as the Main Stadium for the 2002 Asian Games, hosted by Busan. It hosted the spectacular opening and closing ceremonies and the athletics competitions.
2002 FIFA World Cup Venue: As part of South Korea’s hosting duties, it was also selected as a venue for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. It hosted three group stage matches:
Paraguay vs South Africa (Group B)
South Korea vs Poland (Group D) – A historic 2-0 victory for co-hosts South Korea.
France vs Uruguay (Group A) – A goalless draw featuring the defending champions.

Since the 2002 events, the stadium has been used for a variety of major one-off events due to its enormous capacity.
South Korean National Team: It is occasionally used for the South Korean national football team’s most high-profile matches, especially important World Cup qualifiers or friendlies against global opponents that are expected to draw huge crowds.
Concerts & Cultural Events: Its size makes it one of the premier venues in Korea for mega-concerts by the world’s biggest K-pop acts and international music stars.
Lack of a Club Tenant: Unlike other World Cup stadiums, it has never become the permanent home of a K League club. Busan’s professional clubs (Busan IPark) prefer the more intimate and football-specific Busan Gudeok Stadium. This means the Asiad Main Stadium often sits dormant between major events.
