Built with Hope: The MTS Centre was constructed to replace the aging Winnipeg Arena. While its primary initial tenant was the AHL’s Manitoba Moose, it was built to NHL specifications, embodying the city’s hope for the NHL’s return.
The Jets Return (2011): On 31 May 2011, the impossible happened. The Atlanta Thrashers were relocated to Winnipeg, and the Winnipeg Jets were reborn. The first NHL game in the city since 1996 was played at the arena on 9 October 2011, an event marked by unparalleled civic celebration and emotion. The arena became the fortress of the resurrected franchise.
