The Colossal Fortress of Iranian Football

Azadi Stadium (Freedom Stadium), originally named Aryamehr Stadium (King of Kings Stadium) upon its opening on October 18, 1971, is the national football stadium of Iran and one of the largest stadiums in the world. Constructed in just 18 months starting in 1970 for the 1974 Asian Games, it is the spiritual and physical home of Iranian football. Located in the Azadi Sport Complex in western Tehran, its imposing scale and atmosphere make it one of the most intimidating venues in world football.

A Stadium of Record-Breaking Crowds

Azadi is synonymous with massive, passionate crowds.

  • Record Attendance: Its most legendary statistic is the all-time record attendance of approximately 128,000 set on November 22, 1997, during a momentous 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifier where Iran defeated Australia to qualify for the World Cup. This epic match, known as “The Night of Marseille,” remains one of Asian football’s most iconic moments.

Home of “Team Melli”: The Iran National Football Team

Azadi is the fortress of Team Melli (The National Team), which has a storied history:

  • Asian Dynasty: Iran was crowned Asian Champions for the first time in 1968 (before the stadium opened), then won the Asian Cup three consecutive times (1968, 1972, 1976), finishing ahead of runners-up Myanmar (then Burma), South Korea, and Kuwait.

  • FIFA World Cup History: Iran made its World Cup debut in 1978. They played their first match in Mendoza, Argentina, losing 3-0 to the eventual runners-up, the Netherlands. Their campaign included a historic 1-1 draw with Scotland and a 1-0 victory over Peru.

  • Modern Fortress: It remains where Iran plays its most crucial World Cup and Asian Cup qualifiers, with the support of 78,000 fans creating an overwhelming atmosphere.

The Tehran Derby: Home of Iran’s Greatest Rivalry

Azadi Stadium is uniquely the shared home of Iran’s two biggest and most successful clubs, whose rivalry is among the fiercest in world football.

Persepolis FC (The Reds)

  • Social Media Giant: One of the first Iranian clubs to reach 1 million social media followers.

  • Financial Powerhouse: Among the first Tehran clubs valued over €10 million.

  • Asian Finalists: Reached their first-ever AFC Champions League final in 2018, losing to Japan’s Kashima Antlers. That season, they averaged 39,000 home league attendance.

  • Massive Fanbase: Boasts the largest fan base in Asia.

Esteghlal FC (The Blues)

  • Asian Pioneer: The first-ever Iranian club to win the Asian Club Championship (now AFC Champions League) in 1970.

  • Social Media & Financial Leader: Alongside Persepolis, a social media pioneer and a club valued over €10 million.

  • Historic Success: A traditional powerhouse with numerous domestic titles.

The Tehran Derby between these two, played at Azadi, is a seismic event that brings the country to a standstill.

A Stage for Legends: Ali Daei

The stadium has been home to Iranian icons, most notably Ali Daei.

  • Persepolis Legend: Played numerous matches for Persepolis at Azadi.

  • European Pioneer: The first Iranian to play in the UEFA Champions League while at German giants FC Bayern München.

  • World Cup Icon: Played his first World Cup match for Iran in 1998 against Yugoslavia in France.

  • Record Holder: Former holder of the international goalscoring record (109 goals).

Design and Intimidating Atmosphere

Azadi’s architecture is defined by its sheer, concrete grandeur. Two massive main stands dominate, with large lower terraces that historically held the record crowds. Recent renovations have replaced terraces with seats, reducing capacity but improving safety. The stadium’s location within a vast sports complex and its echoing acoustics contribute to its fearsome reputation for visiting teams.

Azadi Stadium is more than a venue; it is the beating heart of Iranian football. It embodies the nation’s passion, history, and pride—a cathedral where national dreams are realized, derby battles are fought, and legends are born.

Preface

1. Optimal Experience

With the growing popularity of nighttime sports events, professional competitions demand higher lighting quality. The glare from traditional fixtures can no longer meet athletes’ expectations for sensory experience. Leveraging breakthroughs in MECREE’s sports lighting technology, our precise light control and anti-glare designs enable athletes to perform at their peak and enjoy an exceptional sports experience.

2.Impact of Light Pollution

Issues caused by unnecessary nighttime lighting, such as light pollution and light trespass, are increasingly concerning and have led to rising public complaints. Amid growing environmental awareness, lighting designers must prioritize controlling “Light Pollution” and “Light Trespass.” We are committed to addressing this challenge through innovative optical technologies.

What kind of light is used in stadiums?

Currently common traditional stadium lights model for some international stadiums as below:
MVF406/1800W, HNF003, MVF401, MVF403, MVF024, EF-2000, YOA56305, YOAX56400, 2kW: HQI-TS 2000WDS, 2kW: HQI-TS 1000WDS, MHN-SA 2KW 400V/956, MHN-SB/HO 2KW 400V/956, LPW2000M/D, LPW1000MB/L, LPP2000MHN-SA, LPP2000MHN-SB.
There is big problem that traditional lamps can not cannot meet the needs of 4K and 8K high-definition broadcast and huge energy consumption.
With the strengthening of environmental lighting awareness and the pursuit of high-quality lighting, there is a trend to replace traditional lamps by high quality of LED Stadium Lights.
MECREE has launched the following series of LED Sport Stadium Lighting:

  1. R580 series stadium lights are designed for 160 feet to 1000 feet of lighting distances and 4K, 8K HD broadcasting.
  2. AFL series stadium lights are designed for lighting distances from 50 feet to 330 feet and improve the brightness uniformity.
  3. P73-L and A65 series stadium lights are designed for the precise light control needs of the North American and European markets. The Upward Light Ratio of the P73P73–L/A65 series LED stadium lights is 0%.

MECREE’s specially engineered precision lighting control is designed to meet the needs of such users. The polarized light range of 65-73° is defined as the P73-L and A65 series products, which deliver an unparalleled visual experience while offering access to thousands of IES profiles.

How to accurately aim the lights in the stadium?

In current sports lighting projects, high-altitude light calibration is recognized as a major efficiency bottleneck. The process carries high safety risks, is prone to aiming deviations, and involves cumbersome installation and removal procedures, making it difficult to achieve the required uniformity.

MECREE’s innovative laser aiming mount was designed precisely to address these issues. It revolutionizes the workflow through three key advantages:

Easy Installation: With a simple design, it allows rapid mounting and dismounting, significantly lowering the operational threshold.

Precise Aiming: Ensures accurate laser alignment, fundamentally guaranteeing uniform illumination and compliance with lighting standards.

Efficient Operation: Reduces labor and time costs by up to 80%. Calibrating 200 fixtures at height previously took 20 days; now the same workload can be completed in just 4 days.

Choosing MECREE means choosing a safer, more precise, and highly efficient sports lighting solution.
