The Port of New York and New Jersey is the largest port on the East Coast of the United States and one of the most important gateways for international trade entering North America. The port complex is located in New York Harbor, connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the inland waterways and transportation networks of the northeastern United States.
The port serves the largest consumer market in the United States, covering the New York metropolitan region, which includes more than 20 million people. Its strategic location allows efficient cargo distribution to major cities such as New York, Newark, Philadelphia, and Boston.
Historically, New York Harbor has been a major maritime center since the 19th century, and modern container operations have significantly expanded across terminals in New Jersey, particularly around Newark Bay and Elizabeth.
The Port of New York and New Jersey is among the busiest container ports in North America.
Key statistics (approximate):
Annual Container Throughput: about 9 million TEUs
Cargo Volume: over 200 million tons annually
Major Container Terminals:
Port Newark Container Terminal
APM Terminals Elizabeth
Maher Terminals
Global Container Terminal (Bayonne)
The port can accommodate large container vessels and post-Panamax ships, especially after the Bayonne Bridge “Raise the Roadway” project, which increased clearance for larger ships following the Panama Canal expansion.
The port complex includes a wide range of cargo handling and logistics facilities:
Deep-water container terminals
Automotive import/export terminals
Bulk cargo terminals
Intermodal rail yards
Distribution and logistics centers
Cruise passenger terminals in Manhattan and Brooklyn
The port is closely connected to inland markets through:
Interstate highways (I-95 corridor)
Extensive rail freight networks
Nearby international airports
The Port of New York and New Jersey plays a critical role in U.S. East Coast trade and global supply chains.
Key roles include:
Largest import gateway on the U.S. East Coast
Major hub for consumer goods distribution
Important node in transatlantic and trans-Pacific shipping routes
Logistics center supporting the Northeast U.S. economy
Major cargo categories include consumer goods, machinery, automobiles, food products, and building materials.
Large container terminals and logistics zones in ports such as the Port of New York and New Jersey operate around the clock and require reliable high-intensity lighting systems.
Typical lighting applications include:
Container yards
High mast lighting towers (30–50 m)
Dockside loading areas
Truck gates and transport lanes
Cargo storage and logistics yards
Modern ports increasingly adopt high-power LED high mast lighting to improve energy efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, and provide uniform illumination for large outdoor operational areas.
Such environments are ideal applications for professional port LED lighting solutions used in container terminals, docks, and large logistics facilities.

Large ports, as critical infrastructure operating 24 hours a day, require highly reliable outdoor lighting systems. These systems are essential for ensuring operational safety, efficiency, and personnel security.
Outdoor areas in ports—such as container yards, loading and unloading zones, parking areas, and main roadways—typically adopt high mast lighting systems to achieve wide-area illumination.
This system utilizes tall poles equipped with multiple high-power luminaires, enabling uniform coverage with fewer installation points, while also reducing glare and simplifying maintenance.
In terms of light sources, high-power LED floodlights are widely used due to their high luminous efficacy, low energy consumption, long lifespan, instant start, and excellent color rendering. They have become the mainstream choice for port lighting
Recommended pole heights:
| Area Type | Recommended Height |
| Large ports/ container yards | 30–40 m |
| Airport apron | 20–40 m |
| General large outdoor areas | 20–55 m |
Overall, port areas typically use poles in the range of 30–40 meters. The exact height should be determined based on site scale and specific lighting requirements through professional design.
Due to the unique environmental conditions of ports—especially coastal ports—lighting equipment must meet far more stringent requirements than standard outdoor lighting. These include:
Ports are exposed to high humidity and salt spray, requiring exceptional corrosion resistance:
Ingress Protection (IP Rating): ≥ IP65 to ensure complete dust protection and resistance to water jets. For critical areas such as quay fronts, IP66 or higher is recommended.
Anti-corrosion Materials and Treatment: Housings are typically made of highly corrosion-resistant materials such as ADC12 die-cast aluminum or 316 stainless steel, combined with multi-layer anti-corrosion coatings.
Ports are subject to strong winds. High mast poles and luminaires installed at height must withstand significant wind loads. Structural design must strictly follow local meteorological data to ensure safety and stability.
Tall poles are highly susceptible to lightning strikes. High-voltage surges generated by lightning can damage sensitive LED drivers through power lines.
Therefore, LED drivers must be equipped with high-performance surge protection devices (SPD), typically rated at 10kV or 20kV, to ensure stable operation under harsh weather conditions.
High-power LED luminaires generate significant heat during operation. If not properly dissipated, it can severely affect luminous efficiency and lifespan.
Thus, luminaires must feature efficient thermal design, such as large-area heat sinks and high thermal conductivity materials, to keep the LED junction temperature within an optimal range.
Illuminance and Uniformity: According to standards such as Code for Design of Seaports (JTS 165-2013), different operational areas have specific minimum illuminance requirements. Uniform lighting must be ensured to avoid overly bright or dark areas that could impair visibility and safety.
Glare Control: Through precise optical design (e.g., asymmetric lenses), light is effectively directed onto the working area, minimizing light spill and reducing glare for operators and surrounding environments.
