The Cotton Bowl Classic, also known as the Cotton Bowl, is an annual American college football bowl game held in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex since 1937. The game was originally played at the Cotton Bowl stadium in Dallas and then moved to the AT&T Stadium in Arlington in 2010. The game is sponsored by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company since 2014 and was previously sponsored by Mobil and AT&T. The game historically featured the champion of the Southwest Conference against a team invited from elsewhere in the country, often a major independent or a runner-up from the Southeastern Conference. Since the dissolution of the SWC, the game has hosted a runner-up from the Big 12 Conference, facing an SEC team from 1999 to 2014. The Cotton Bowl Classic is one of six bowls in the College Football Playoff (CFP) since 2014 and hosted a national semifinal following the 2015, 2018, and 2021 seasons. The winner of the Cotton Bowl is awarded the Field Scovell Trophy.
The Cotton Bowl is named after its original location, the Cotton Bowl stadium in Dallas, which opened in 1930. The stadium became known as “The House That Doak Built” because of the large crowds that former SMU running back Doak Walker drew during his college career in the late 1940s. The stadium was originally called the Fair Park Bowl and is located in Fair Park, the site of the State Fair of Texas. Texas is the leading producer of cotton in the United States, and the name “Cotton Bowl” is a play on the phrase “cotton boll.” The NFL’s Dallas Cowboys also called the Cotton Bowl home for 11 years, from 1960 to 1971, before moving to Texas Stadium.
The 2023 Cotton Bowl Classic was played on January 2, 2023, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. It was the 87th annual Cotton Bowl Classic and featured two teams selected at-large by the College Football Playoff selection committee, Tulane from the American Athletic Conference and USC from the Pac-12 Conference. The game began at 12:10 p.m. CST and was aired on ESPN. It was one of the bowl games concluding the 2022 FBS football season. The game was sponsored by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and was officially known as the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.
The Cotton Bowl for this particular year features the USC Trojans and the Tulane Green Wave. It is a Pac-12 vs. AAC matchup. Tulane won the American Athletic Conference title game against UCF on championship weekend to earn a spot in the Cotton Bowl. USC, on the other hand, missed out on the College Football Playoff after losing to Utah in the Pac-12 Championship, making the Cotton Bowl their consolation game.
The Tulane Green Wave won the Cotton Bowl, defeating the USC Trojans by a score of 46-45. It was a comeback victory for Tulane, who were down by 15 points with just over 4 minutes remaining in the game. Tulane’s freshman tight end, Alex Bauman, caught a six-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Michael Pratt with nine seconds left in the game to secure the victory. The win capped off a historic season for Tulane, who finished with a 12-2 record and won the American Athletic Conference championship.
The seating capacity of the Cotton Bowl was expanded from 68,252 to 92,100 during the 2008 renovations.
