Extra Stadium Info – Ken Rosewall Arena (Extended Professional Version)

Ken Rosewall Arena is one of Australia’s most iconic mid-size sports venues, located within the Sydney Olympic Park precinct. Officially opened in December 1999, the arena was built as part of the Olympic tennis centre development that supported the 2000 Summer Olympic Games. The venue is named in honour of Ken Rosewall, one of Australia’s greatest tennis players, celebrated for his longevity, precision, and eight Grand Slam singles titles.

Historical Background & Olympic Legacy

In 2000, Ken Rosewall Arena served as one of the key tennis venues during the Games of the XXVII Olympiad. It hosted numerous Olympic tennis matches, contributing to one of the defining sports legacies of Sydney’s Olympic Park. The arena’s role in the Olympics significantly boosted its international recognition and cemented its status as an essential Australian tennis landmark.

After the Olympics, the arena continued to host major international competitions including:

  • Sydney International

  • ATP Cup (hosting group-stage ties)

  • Various WTA and ATP events

  • National netball competitions (after modernization)

The combination of Olympic history and continuous use for high-profile tournaments makes the Ken Rosewall Arena a venue frequently referenced in global tennis infrastructure discussions.

Architecture & Technical Design

Designed as part of the wider Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre, the arena features:

  • A bowl-style spectator configuration with excellent sightlines

  • A 10,000-seat capacity, ideal for premium tennis and indoor sports events

  • An originally open-air structure with fixed spectator tiers

During the early years, the venue functioned primarily as an outdoor tennis show court, benefitting from Sydney’s mild climate. However, evolving requirements for multi-sport usage led to one of the most significant renovations in its history.

2019–2020 Major Redevelopment (Roof + Lighting Modernization)

To support year-round professional events, the New South Wales Government invested in a major upgrade completed in late 2019:

1. Installation of a Permanent Roof

A striking cable-tension roof system was added:

  • All-weather protection for players and spectators

  • Better conditions for television broadcasting

  • A modern architectural look that transformed the arena into a true multi-event venue

2. Advanced LED Lighting System (Broadcast-Ready)

The redevelopment included a full upgrade to a high-performance LED lighting system, designed to:

  • Meet international tennis broadcasting standards

  • Reduce glare and shadows on the court

  • Improve flicker-free ultra-slow-motion capture

  • Lower energy consumption significantly

  • Enable rapid lighting control for event transitions

These lighting characteristics align with modern venues worldwide and make the arena suitable for hosting global tennis events as well as professional netball.

3. New Playing Surfaces & Venue Technology

  • Tennis court resurfacing using high-quality hard-court material

  • Improved player facilities and athlete recovery areas

  • Upgraded seating, concourses, and accessibility infrastructure

Current Use & Major Events

Following the renovation, Ken Rosewall Arena expanded its purpose:

Preface

1.Optimal Experience

With the craze of sport games in the night, and more professional events are played at night, people desire for lighting to play at the very beginning so now people more concern about the quality of lighting, we believe that the glare produced by ordinary lamps can no longer meet the athletes’ pursuit of sensory experience. But now, thanks to developments in MECREE’s sports lighting technology, our precise control and anti-glare lighting makes it possible for sports men and women to perform at their best and enjoy the best sports experience.

2.Impact of Light Pollution

There is increasing concern for the problems created by unwanted light at night, such as light pollution and light trespass, result in various types of complaints. Particularly with increasing awareness of environmental problems of all types, it is important that lighting designers recognize the need to control problems related to the general subjects of “Light Pollution” and “Light Trespass.” So we have tried every effort to develope a newest optical technology to solve the problem.

What kind of light is used in stadiums?

Currently common traditional stadium lights model for some international stadiums as below:
MVF406/1800W, HNF003, MVF401, MVF403, MVF024, EF-2000, YOA56305, YOAX56400, 2kW: HQI-TS 2000WDS, 2kW: HQI-TS 1000WDS, MHN-SA 2KW 400V/956, MHN-SB/HO 2KW 400V/956, LPW2000M/D, LPW1000MB/L, LPP2000MHN-SA, LPP2000MHN-SB.
There is big problem that traditional lamps can not cannot meet the needs of 4K and 8K high-definition broadcast and huge energy consumption.
With the strengthening of environmental lighting awareness and the pursuit of high-quality lighting, there is a trend to replace traditional lamps by high quality of LED Stadium Lights.
MECREE has launched the following series of LED Sport Stadium Lighting:

  1. R580 series stadium lights are designed for 160 feet to 1000 feet of lighting distances and 4K, 8K HD broadcasting.
  2. AFL series stadium lights are designed for lighting distances from 50 feet to 330 feet and improve the brightness uniformity.
  3. P73-L and A65 series stadium lights are designed for the precise light control needs of the North American and European markets. The Upward Light Ratio of the P73-L and A65 series LED stadium lights is 0%.

MECREE’s specially engineered precision lighting control is designed to meet the needs of such users. The polarized light range of 65-73° is defined as the P73-L and A65 series products, which deliver an unparalleled visual experience while offering access to thousands of IES profiles.

How to accurately aim the lights in the stadium?

In current sports lighting projects, high-altitude light calibration is recognized as a major efficiency bottleneck. The process carries high safety risks, is prone to aiming deviations, and involves cumbersome installation and removal procedures, making it difficult to achieve the required uniformity.

MECREE’s innovative laser aiming mount was designed precisely to address these issues. It revolutionizes the workflow through three key advantages:

Easy Installation: With a simple design, it allows rapid mounting and dismounting, significantly lowering the operational threshold.

Precise Aiming: Ensures accurate laser alignment, fundamentally guaranteeing uniform illumination and compliance with lighting standards.

Efficient Operation: Reduces labor and time costs by up to 80%. Calibrating 200 fixtures at height previously took 20 days; now the same workload can be completed in just 4 days.

Choosing MECREE means choosing a safer, more precise, and highly efficient sports lighting solution.
