Construction began in 2000 as part of the development of Goyang City’s new administrative town. Opened in 2003, it was designed as a large-scale public sports complex to serve the growing population of northern Gyeonggi Province and the Seoul metropolitan area.
The stadium’s most distinctive architectural feature is its unique roof structure, designed to resemble a pair of traditional Korean “gat” (hat) brims meeting in the center. The design symbolizes communication and harmony. As a true multi-purpose venue, it features a full, international-standard athletics track surrounding the football pitch.
While lacking a dedicated professional club tenant, Goyang Stadium has hosted a variety of significant events due to its large capacity and modern facilities:
Football: Has served as a neutral venue for K League and AFC Champions League matches. It was notably used by FC Seoul for several ACL home games between 2009 and 2013 when their regular home, Seoul World Cup Stadium, was unavailable.
Athletics: A premier venue for national and international track and field competitions, including the Korean National Sports Festival.
Concerts and Culture: A popular large-scale venue for major K-pop concerts and international music tours, cultural festivals, and public gatherings.
There is no public record of any major structural renovation since its opening in 2003. The stadium is maintained to a high standard with routine upkeep and periodic updates to its pitch, seating, and facilities to host international-standard events.
