Estadio Hernando Siles is one of the most iconic sports venues in Bolivia, located in La Paz at a high altitude. Opened in 1930, the stadium hosts football matches, athletics events, and concerts, and has been a key venue for both national and international competitions. The stadium opened with a football match won by Club The Strongest, which remains one of the stadium’s primary tenants alongside Club Bolívar.
Due to its high-altitude location, the stadium has attracted global attention. In 2007, FIFA temporarily banned matches at Hernando Siles, citing that visiting teams had insufficient time to acclimatize. In 2017, Brazilian football star Neymar highlighted the challenges of playing under these conditions during a FIFA World Cup qualifier, posting pictures of players using oxygen masks.
Club Bolívar (founded 1925) and Club The Strongest (founded 1908) are the main tenants.
Both clubs have won multiple Bolivian top-flight league titles and frequently participate in the Copa Libertadores, South America’s premier club competition.
They were among the first Bolivian clubs to reach 100,000 followers on their main social media pages.
Estadio Hernando Siles has hosted memorable national team matches, including a 6-1 victory over Argentina in 2009 with 30,000 spectators, marking the worst defeat for Argentina in 60 years.
The stadium also hosted Bolivia’s games in the 1930 FIFA World Cup, the inaugural tournament for national football teams, where Bolivia played against Yugoslavia and Brazil.
